Occasionally I get very poorly compiled review submissions. I’m pretty sure in the original there was a press release and stuff … but the files that I ended up listening to only had song titles. Luckily I had the foresight to jot down the name of at least one of the artists and therefore through a rigorous and meticulous investigation, using the leading internet search engine, I was able to find out what was going on. None of the above has made me happy because I’d rather be blowing stuff up. Take note please Spaccamonti / Pilia.
The release itself is pretty average. It seems to be an exercise in reviving the simple pleasure of acoustic and electric guitar. Vaguely rock stuff happens (the drum beat on “Fuga” is interminable and the e-bow used is also truly horrible.) Carapace is a bit like afrobeat meets Brian Eno but is essentially unremarkable and I’d have to say there’s little memorable to commend Mr. Spaccamonti’s side of the vinyl.
The other side is Mr. Spilia and it’s a hell of a lot better. I don’t know if it’s the recording or the playing or what but there is a lot more depth (emotional and otherwise) to his side. It also didn’t make me want to skip through it. He takes a more experimental approach that seems a lot more like something that should be committed to vinyl but I have to question the point of this release.
PS A final Google revealed this to be a Brigadisco release. The first one that I have not really liked. Sorry Brigadisco.
